Accident vs.Purpose

So Little DX has started learing 'accident' and 'purpose' at school. It appears that he is having a hard time with this. The class is on the carpet, Little DX is kicking another student and the teacher asks him to stop. He continues so the teacher asks him to go to the back of the class and stretch out.

He tells her no.

Needless to say he gets in trouble. I get a call from the teacher. When Little DX gets home I question him.

Me: Were you kicking someone at school.

Little DX: No.

Me: What do you mean no.. that is not what the teacher told me.

Little DX: Well It was an accident.

Me: Did your teacher ask you to stop?

Little DX: Yes.

Me: And did you stop?

Little DX: I couldn’t.

Me: What do you mean you couldn’t?

Little DX: I did not know that I was kicking her.

Me: Oh, so you were kicking a little girl.

Little DX: No, it was my foot was kicking her, but I did not know it was hitting her.

Me: So what your telling me is that: Your foot was hitting a little girl, your teacher told you to stop kicking the little girl, but your did not know that your foot was hitting the little girl even after you teacher brought it to your attention and asked you to move. On top of all that information, this was an accident?!

Little DX: Well it was an accident!

Me: It sounds like you were doing this on purpose!

Little DX: Well it was my foot!

Me: Yea Little DX it was your foot.

5 year olds, you just can’t get through to them.
